DÍA DE LOS MUERTOS - DAY OF THE DEAD Sponsor

The 100 Men Hall’s mission is to promote and preserve the hall, a centuries’ old nexus of social justice and artistic expression for a population historically denied access to both, in the Jim Crow South. Today, the hall fosters civic participation in a variety of causes to promote the greater common good, supporting creative expression and activist art for women and men who have struggled to find a mainstream connection due to their social or artistic convictions, or minority status. Those familiar with the Hall consider it a beloved community treasure; those learning about it for the first time are instantly captivated by its storied past.

The Hall has enlarged the original mission of supporting the African American community to celebrate and elevate those cultures that seldom have the spotlight. Día de los Muertos/Day of the Dead celebrates ancestors with All Souls' Day, a holiday in Mexico dating back to the early 1500s. The holiday, which is celebrated on November 1 and 2, is like a family reunion—except dead ancestors are the guests of honor. Day of the Dead is a joyful time that helps people remember the deceased and celebrate their memory.

A community altar is available for anyone to bring a memento of their loved one as well as individual altars are encouraged. Mariachi Jalisco, a four-piece mariachi band, performs traditional music and guests are invited to view the altars, dance, eat and drink!

This is a wonderful community event that attracts a diverse crowd of people who enjoy coming together to experience this sacred festival.
